Traditional Southern Hemisphere Date October 31st - Traditional Northern Hemispehere Date May 1st Beltane is the festival honoring all life at the culmination of Spring and as we prepare to usher in Summer. As the spring showers have helped to green the lands and the fertility of Mother Nature permeates the air we gather to celebrate the union of the young Sun God and the maiden Goddess and the conception of the new generation. The word 'Beltane' comes from the Celtic God 'Bel', 'the bright one' and the Gaelic word for fire 'teine'. Coupled together they become 'Bright Fire', which ties into the traditional bonfires that are lit to honour the Sun and to tempt the support of Bel and the Sun's light to tend the future harvest and to protect the community. Traditionally all fires in the community were to be extinguished in place of the sacred fire kindled specially for Beltane. A classic ritual for Beltane celebrations is the Maypole Dance. A Birch or Hawthorn pole is erected to symbolise the virility of the God and a ring of fresh flowers is placed atop the pole to represent the fertility of the Goddess. The many coloured ribbons and the weaving nature of the dance itself in turn evoke the Spiral of Life and represent the forthcoming union of the God and Goddess. Given the themes of sacred union Beltane is a popular time for performing Handfasting ceremonies. These Pagan wedding ceremonies involves the familiar exchange of vows and tokens (or rings) but also prominently feature the ritual tying of the knot. The hands of the happy couple are tied together with a sacred or specially made cord or set of ribbons which symbolises their coming together, while the untying at the end of the ceremony is designed to represent their intent to remain so entangled and of their free will.
