Ritual bells are used for all sorts of magickal activities for as long as we have been a metal working people, opening and closing your circle or ritual, for cleansing energies or aiding focus.  When a bell is rung the vibrations it produces are filled with a power that reverberates through the air.  It is said that the loud high pitched sounds of a bell being rung are unbearable to the spirits that may do us harm or spread evil and the reverberating sound will chase them from you leaving a space cleansed of their influence.
